About savewithsolarpanels.co.uk — honest solar savings
Most solar websites are trying to sell you panels. We're trying to give you the one thing the salespeople won't — honest, source-backed numbers with the downsides stated plainly, so you can decide for yourself whether solar is worth it for your home.
Who we are
This site is an independent solar savings guide for UK homeowners, operated and published by SEO Dons Ltd — a UK company registered in England and Wales, Company No. 16766013, at 71–75 Shelton Street, London WC2H 9JQ. We are not a solar installer, we don't manufacture or sell panels, and we aren't tied to any one product, tariff or brand. That independence is the whole point: because we don't have a warehouse of stock to shift, we have no reason to inflate a saving, hide a downside, or push a battery you don't need.
You won't find invented statistics on this site — no fictional "years in business", no made-up install counts, no five-star testimonials we can't prove. Where we give a number, it's a range drawn from public, dated sources like the Ofgem price cap and the Energy Saving Trust, stamped with the date it was true. If we can't stand behind a figure, it doesn't go on the page.
Why this site exists
The typical person who lands here has already been cold-called by a solar firm or two, been quoted a payback that "felt too good to be true", and come away trusting nobody. That instinct is healthy. The industry really does massage the maths — assuming an export rate of 20–40p when you'll realistically get around 12p, or an inflated import price, to make payback "look shorter than it really is". Add promises to take your "bill to zero" and countdown timers on the checkout, and it's no wonder homeowners feel manipulated rather than informed.
We built this site to be the straight answer to a money question: will solar actually save me money, how much, and how long until it pays back? We'd genuinely rather lose your enquiry than tell you something that isn't true.
What we do
Two things, in this order:
- Honest savings guidance. Real UK numbers for 2026 — costs, savings ranges, payback and the situations where solar makes no sense — explained in plain English with the assumptions on show. Start with is solar worth it?, run your own figures on the savings calculator, or read what a system really costs.
- Matching you to independent installers. When your numbers look worth pursuing, we connect you with independent, MCS-certified installers for real, itemised quotes — the certification that unlocks the Smart Export Guarantee and backs your consumer protection. You compare like for like and choose; there's no obligation, and no salesperson calls you out of the blue.
Our promise to you
Everything on this site is built around a single doctrine — honesty as trust. In practice that means:
- Ranges, not guarantees. A typical 4kWp system saves roughly £400–£700 a year and pays back in about 7–12 years — but the honest figure for your roof only comes from a survey. We never promise a single fixed saving.
- We concede the downsides. Solar is a solid, unspectacular investment, not a miracle. We'll always show you the weaker side of the case, including the fact that a battery usually lengthens payback rather than shortening it.
- We'll tell you when solar is NOT worth it. A north-only roof, heavy shading, very low daytime usage or plans to move within a few years can all sink the case. If that's you, we'll say so — read the honest worth-it verdict before you spend a penny.
- Every rate is dated. We stamp figures "as at" their date and name the live tariffs, so you're never reading a stale number — for example Octopus Outgoing export at 12p (cut from a rate that was 15p on 1 March 2026), as at July 2026.
- No phone spam. There's no phone number on this site on purpose. Every enquiry is an online form, we don't cold-call, and we never sell your details.
- No fake urgency. The only genuine "why now" we'll use is the real, dated one: 0% VAT on residential solar runs to 31 March 2027, then reverts to 5%. No countdown clocks, no "act today" pressure.
What we won't do
Some claims are so common in solar marketing that avoiding them is itself a promise. We will never tell you solar gives you "free" electricity or takes your bill "to zero"; you'll always keep a grid connection and a daily standing charge. We won't call anyone a "government-approved solar installer" — no such badge exists. And we won't repeat the widely-quoted figure that solar "adds around 14%" or "£32,000" to your home's value: those numbers aren't robustly evidenced, so we mention them only to warn you not to bank on them, never as our own claim. Buy solar for the bill savings over years of ownership, not as a home-value play.
How we're funded, in plain terms
Free guidance still has to be paid for somehow, and we'd rather be upfront than coy about it. When you ask to be matched to installers, we're funded through a standard introduction arrangement with the independent firms you're connected to. It costs you nothing, it doesn't add a penny to your quote, and — crucially — it never colours the advice on these pages. The proof is simple: we still publish the cases where solar isn't worth it and openly steer unsuitable homes away, even though that means no introduction at all.
Where to start
If you're weighing it up, the honest route through the site is: read is solar worth it? for the straight verdict, use the savings calculator to see ranges for your own roof, check the real cost of a system, and see what help exists on grants and funding (spoiler: for most English and Welsh homeowners it's 0% VAT and the export payment, not a cash grant). Still have questions? Our solar savings FAQs answer the ones homeowners ask most.
