Solar savings by UK area
Where you live genuinely changes the maths. Pick your area for the local generation figure, the housing stock that suits solar, and an honest local payback range — not a single national number.
Most solar sites quote a single UK-wide payback. That hides a real gap: irradiance (the sunlight your roof receives) varies by region, so identical panels in Bristol or Southampton out-generate the same panels in Manchester or Leeds by 10–20% a year. Orientation, pitch and shading still decide how close you get to the local ceiling — but the regional resource is a genuine tailwind (or headwind) worth knowing before you compare quotes. Each area page below carries its own generation figure, real neighbourhoods and council context, and an honest local payback band.

Not sure of your local figure?
If your town isn't listed, the regional guide still applies: the South West and southern England sit around 950–1,050 kWh per kWp a year; the Midlands and Wales around 900–950; the North and Scotland closer to 800–900. Whatever your area, the honest figure for your specific roof comes from a survey — the free savings calculator lets you factor in your roof direction, and how much solar panels save walks through the full method.
